Throwing Large Pieces Without Straining

Through repeated poor posture, many potters suffer from pain—particularly in the back and neck—that worsens over the years.

These tensions are not inevitable.

The throwing approach we practice and teach at the École des Céramistes aims for freedom of movement. It focuses on easing physical tension while caring for your body over the long haul.

A precise and efficient throwing technique, adaptable to large pieces, porcelain, creative exploration, series production, and beyond. Throwing designed for freedom of movement and relaxation, working in harmony with the body for long-term health, thus preventing pain.

The exercises call for the student’s rigor and focus, unlocking and developing their full skill and sensitivity: clay’s tactile and proprioceptive qualities allow for an intuitive, instinctual perception of the piece.

Even when throwing heavy amounts of clay, there is no need to look like Schwarzenegger or destroy your back.

It is simply a matter of harnessing the wheel’s momentum and adding your own strength to it. The key lies in finding the right balance of pressure.

To achieve this, you need to find your own center of gravity. Where do you think yours is?

Body, breath, hands, wheel, clay: dance your pots!
